Maybe it’s just me…

…but music is like a soundtrack to my life.  Sometimes I hear a song or a band and it takes me right to a time or place.  There is one album that has been on my iphone since the day I got it.  That’s a rare thing because I’m always switching new stuff in and out.  Whenever a song from this album comes on, I quickly skip over it, but I never delete it from my phone (weird huh)

Earlier this week a song from this album came on when I was coming home from school, and I let it play.  I needed to find out why I couldn’t listen to it or delete it.  I closed my eyes and took a journey back.

It brought me back to a place of happiness and sadness in balance.  It was the winter I posted a comment on  a blog for the first time and made a new friend.  Then many more friends followed.  It was also the winter that my dad kicked my ass and I ran to live with my uncle.  That winter I had and lost my first boyfriend.

This album was there through it all.  I listened to it every day.  Some days it’s all I would listen to.  It’s the reason I wanted to learn to play guitar and make my own music.  I can’t ever delete this one.  It is very special to me.

  1. You are not the only one. More than anything, music brings back the most memories for me. Whether they be happy or sad. Almost any important moment in my life, I can think of the song or band that relates to that memory. Sometimes it's a good thing, and I can relive those moments. Others, it's hard because not only does it bring back painful things, it means I can't listen to a really good song/album/band. Just a few weeks ago, for the first time in over three years I was able to listen to an album again. Every time it'd cross my mind, or show up on shuffle, I'd do anything to get it to pass. But I finally sat down and made the decision to listen to it all the way through, and work through all those emotions. It was hard, but it gave me closure. I can now listen to that album and see the good things that were happening in the background, while all the bad things were in the foreground.

I'm glad you had this album to get you through that winter. I remember that winter well. All the ups and downs. I've never listened to Placebo, but I listened to the whole album, and I'm impressed. I can see why it inspired you.

I hope you too will be able to hear this album and be able to reflect on the past in a good light, even with all the bad things that happened.

  2. Hello David
I don't think it's just you at all, I think many, if not most, people have music that has personal significance for them, that remind them of landmarks in their life, whether it be specific songs or whole albums. I know that's certainly the case for me.
I came to cyberspace at much the same time as you, autumn/winter 2009 into 2010, left my first blog comment just before Christmas that year, at 'Twinergy', started my own blog in February 2010, and I've been through a series of highs and lows since, both in Blogland and in my real life, some of which closely parallel yours, of new friends, of loss, of rejection, of acceptance. Overall, I'm convinced that my time here has had more positives than negatives, which is why I'm still around when some others have come and gone, some missed and lamented, others not. I'm pleased that you're one of those who is still here, and I hope to be able to continue to share your music in the future.

    Love & best wishes

  3. Very profound post, DJ.

Music is like that. Remember how Kev said hearing Marty Robbins took him back to good times with his Grandpa.

Hearing “Something” took me back to good times as a kid.

You know what? Smells can be like that too.

I got a haircut the other day, and the stylist used a shampoo on me, the same shampoo that an old girlfriend used to use…it took right right back to over 30 years ago.

But time heals all wounds…and also wounds many heels.

  4. You're not alone in having music as a best friend. I guess my first intro to music in a big way was church music in about the 5th or 6th grade. That spread out, and today, it's very unusual that I am not listening to something via one medium or another.

I like this album very much. I put it on while I surfed the news sites this morning, and enjoyed it all the way through. I can see why it speaks to you. You've come a long way since that night you fled to your uncle. I'm glad you have music as a tonic, you could do worse!

    Peace <3

  5. The Theme song opener from the movie “TOP GUN”, followed by Kenny Loggins “Danger Zone” as the 'turkey'(F14) was launched off the 'boat' (aircraft carrier).

In fact, most of the soundtrack from that movie has my fave songs. The “Old Miramar” is but a memory now; but back in the 1980's, it is just as it appears in the movie.

    …… “FOGGY” 🙂

  6. Hi there, D_

As others have said, music is a gateway to memories for a lot of people. With me, I think it depends on the track: some may connect to particular events, but a lot seem to evoke the “feel” of the period when I first heard them. Perhaps this is why I'm touchy about cover versions: somehow to me a track should sound a particular way, and it often grates on me when it's done differently.

I'm glad you were able to listen to this album, and come to terms with the memories it had for you. It was a particular intense time in your life, so I'm not surprised you chose to skip the tracks before now.

    Take care

    Mark
